Inlays & Onlays

Inlays or onlays are restorations used to restore a tooth when more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged.

What are Inlays/Onlays?

Inlays are custom-made and shaped to fit perfectly inside of a tooth. Onlays are also custom made but are meant for more a weaker or more decayed tooth and extend outside the cusps of the tooth. They are both securely bonded so no further decay occurs.

What is the procedure for inlays and onlays?

It takes two appointments to complete the inlay or onlay procedure. At the first appointment, one of the dentists at Lynwood Dental Excellence, will numb the area and remove any decay or damage. This cleans and prepares your tooth for the inlay or onlay. Then the dentist will take a mold of the tooth and place a temporary restoration. The mold will be sent to a laboratory where the dental inlay or onlay is created. Inlays and onlays are made of resin, gold or porcelain. Porcelain has become a popular choice recently as it allows the inlay and onlay to match the natural color of the tooth. At the second appointment, the dentist will perfectly fit the inlay or onlay onto the tooth and use resin to bond it to the tooth.

Why choose an inlay or onlay?

While traditional fillings can weaken a tooth, inlays and onlays can strengthen a decayed tooth by up to 75%. They are also much more natural looking than metal filings and will match the natural color of your teeth. Inlays and onlays are also designed to last, preventing further treatment to the tooth.
